What happened today in history

I am sitting bored here at work so I looked up what all happened today.

• Napoleon Bonapart was born today in 1769
  
• India became independent in 1947
  
• Congo became independent in 1960
  
• South Korea was established in 1948
  
• The Panama Canal opened in 1914
  and the most interesting piece of history (in my opinion)
  
• World War Two ended 60 years ago today
